INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT INDORE (IIMI), INDORE

Established in 1996, Indian Institute of Management Indore is the sixth in the prestigious IIM family of management schools. The institute was chosen to be set up in Indore to give an impetus to management education in central India and has ever since been acting as the pioneer in the field of management, interfacing with the industry, government sectors and PSUs.

The essence of management, IIM I believes, lies in managing one's own ambitions and forging ahead consciously. "A strong theoretical foundation is the basis of good corporate practice" this, coupled with a grounding in management as it is practiced, is the underlying theme of the flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP). Spanning two years the programme is benchmarked against similar programmes of the best business schools in the world. Experiential learning, IT orientation, and social sensitivity are some of the unique features of the programme.

Situated atop a scenic hillock, the beautiful 193 acre campus provides an ideal backdrop for some of the brightest minds in the country to work their best to become the best they can be. To back this up, IIM Indore has a solid infrastructure ranging from a very beautiful campus and hostels to a strong IT backbone and the latest in teaching aids. The geographical proximity to the fastest growing industrial belt in India and the presence of Special Economic Zones around Indore provide the right environment for both giving hands-on experience to the students and in enabling the industry to make use of the wealth of management expertise available in the institute.

IIM Indore’s achievements in such a short span of time can be attributed to its innovative spirit, its will to excel, and, to a great extent, to the relationship it has developed with the Indore community.

Post Graduate Program in Management

The Post Graduate Programme (PGP) in Management at IIM Indore is a two-year, full-time, residential programme. It is recognised by the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to M.B.A. Degree. The programme aims to groom participants into competent professional managers with—

• a capacity to learn and adapt to national and international environment;
• an orientation towards achieving excellence, maintaining high ethical standards; and
• a capacity to work effectively and efficiently, both individually and in-groups.

The PGP is spread over two years, each year consisting of three terms. In between the first and second years, the participant spends eight weeks on a summer project in a business organisation. The academic year begins in June/July and ends in March/April of the following year.

The PGP of IIM Indore have some special features like:

Experiential Learning,
International Focus,
Information Technology Orientation, and
Social Sensitivity

Another unique feature of the PGP at IIM Indore is a compulsory course called Society, Business and Management which exposes the participants to the ethical dilemmas and social responsibilities of business through classroom sessions and develops their social sensitivity through a one-week attachment with an NGO or the CSR wing of a business organization.

Pedagogy

IIM Indore uses a combination of various teaching methods such as cases, projects, independent studies, computer aided instructions, group discussions, lectures, seminars, presentations by participants, and lectures by guest speakers from industry and government. The case method is the predominant pedagogical tool. This sharpens the analytical skills of participants and helps analyze problems from multi-functional perspectives. Instructors mainly guide the group, push participants to develop and defend arguments, and take decisions.

Structure

The Post Graduate Programme lasts six trimesters, spread over two years, with a summer project in between the two years. This eight-week programme is an opportunity for participants to put their ideas and skills to work in established and reputed companies from various sectors.

The first year participants are provided with the fundamental conceptual knowledge, analytical skills and techniques, contextual understanding, environmental awareness and overall perspective that will serve as the bedrock for the programme. The areas covered are Marketing, Finance, Human Resource Management, Quantitative Research, Operations, Economics and Strategy.

In the second year, electives will give participants a deeper understanding of different functional areas and enable them to specialize in areas of their choice. There is emphasis on the application of knowledge gained in the form of projects, group exercises and case discussions. Guest lectures and workshops further enrich their learning.

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT, AHMEDABAD (IIMA)

In just four decades IIMA has evolved from being India’s premier management institute to a notable international school of management. It all started with Dr Vikram Sarabhai and a few other public spirited industrialists realizing that agriculture, education, health, transportation, population control, energy, and public administration were all vital elements in a growing society and that it was necessary to link these meaningfully with industry. The result was the creation of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad in 1961 as an autonomous body with the active collaboration of the Government of India, Government of Gujarat, and industry. It was evident that to have a vision was not enough. Effective governance and quality education were seen as critical aspects. From the very start the founders introduced the concept of faculty governance: all members of the faculty play an important role in administering the diverse academic and non-academic activities of the Institute. The empowerment of the faculty has been the propelling force behind the high quality of learning experience at IIMA. The Institute had initial collaboration with Harvard Business School. This collaboration greatly influenced the Institute’s approach to education. Gradually it emerged as a confluence of the best of Eastern and Western values.

The two-year full-time Post-Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), rated as the toughest MBA programme in the world to get admission, is the flagship programme of IIMA. Its main objective is to develop young men and women into competent professional managers, capable of working in any sector of organized activity, proceeding leadership and achieving excellence in performance while contributing to the welfare of the larger society. The programme specifically attempts to:
equip students with the required conceptual and interpersonal skills and sense of social purpose for managerial decision-making,
develop leadership capabilities to act as change agents and be a source of motivation in the organizations they work in,
nurture the desire to excel in performance without compromising integrity, honesty and fairness. IIMA is known for the depth and rigour of the programme. The curriculum, reviewed and revised periodically, remain relevant and contemporary.
