KARNATAKA UNIVERSITY, DHARWAD

Established initially at Mumbai in 1949, the location was shifted to Dharwad in October, 1949 and Karnatak University had its official inauguration in March 1950. Covering a vast expanse of 750 acres on the hill named 'Chota Mahabaleshwar' one of seven hillocks on which Dharwad is beautifully perched inviting comparison with Rome, the University has its own ambience with a sylvan setting of undulating greenery. Though spacious initially the campus now looks small with 48 Departments that have come up during the half century or so of its historic existence. The University in its formative years had the leadership of Dr. D.C. Pavate as the Vice-Chancellor (1954-1967 ) who gave it a shape all its own with symmetry that merges with the environ that spells harmony. The rocky edifice built in magnificent style is a tribute to his genius as the architect with a matching academic input. the faculty, to earn the campus the name, Pavate Nagar for posterity. The galaxy of Vice-Chancellor that lent their shoulders to the wheel of progress, the dons and the deans brightening the academic horizons and the illustrious band of the students spanning out for and wide holding coveted positions have all given it in aura of eminence that now the University to day is rated as one of the handful Universities in the Country with a potential for Excellence, as identified by NAAC by giving a five star status which only a handful of Universities have been able to achieve. UGC recently has granted an outlay of rupees 25 crores. The newly created Departments like Genetics, Microbiology, Reproductive Health Management bid fair to do well besides the established departments of yore with a track record of Academic Excellence. The Karnatak University has Postgraduate Centers at Belgaum on a sprawling campus with 178 acres, Postgraduate Centre at Torvi, Bijapur on 200 acres with another Postgraduate Centre at Karwar 6 acres, catering to fisheries, needless to mention P.G. Programmes in leading colleges at Dandeli, Bagalkot, Gadag, Haveri, Bijapur, Dharwad, Hubli, Ilkal, Jamkhandi and Belgaum. The second oldest in the state, Karnatak University with 48 P.G. Departments, 5 P.G. Centers, 5 Constituent College : 256 Affiliating Colleges with 264 P.G. teachers, 4252 UG teachers, 4531 PG students and 1,01,142 UG students in a community of academics, all drawn in the adventure of learning from the seven districts of Northern Karnataka. In the nearly 1000 km stretch between the erstwhile Bombay and Bangalore, Karnatak University, Dharwad with its tower and the clock with radium hands and figure, as time ticks by, radiate the light of learning beckoning alumni all around.

" University stands for humanism, tolerance, reason, adventure of ideas and search for the truth."

INSTITUTE FOR TECHNOLOGY & MANAGEMENT, BANGALORE

The Campus
In 1992, the ITM Trust set-down its second Business School in a city that, within a decade, has made the country proud as the “Silicon Valley of India”. ITM Bangalore is situated in South Bangalore , a fast emerging hub for technology giants which provides the right ambience for intellectual pursuit and industry integration.
ITM Bangalore has its own sprawling campus spread over 3.5 acres, with furnished hostels, administrative building, well-stocked library and reference rooms, auditorium, spacious classrooms and state-of-the art computer labs. The fully residential program is able to cater to the wide interest of diversified students from across India.
The campus offers the two-year full time residential PGDBM program approved by AICTE, with specializations in Marketing, Finance, Human Resources and Information Technology.
The endeavor of the Institution over the past decade has been to transform young, bright graduates into aspiring managers seeking challenging opportunities in the new millennium. ITM Bangalore believes that management education is not one giant leap but a partnership in progress. It is a series of small but sure steps where each step is an opportunity for self-assessment and a realization to scale greater heights. This partnership between dynamic young students and management with a vision strives towards achieving one ultimatum – “Success through Acquisition of Knowledge”. The Management, Faculty and Staff are committed in working together with students to make this goal a reality.

The ITM Experiecnce
Every year, 300 students successfully enroll in the ITM PGDM program, to embark on a two year experience of learning and development, called the ITM Experience. The ITM Experience is composed of:

Core : Academics The first year of the program is dedicated to developing a core of knowledge in the student, preparing him/her for more advanced study. Starting with Foundation Modules, the first three trimesters progressively build up a strong academic base and conceptually sound fundamentals in the student, preparing him for advanced study. In our business programs, the second year teaching methodology combines the best of practical and theoretical methods. The Harvard Case Methodology is most prevalent. Students are exposed to a variety of cases, from the Harvard, INSEAD and Ivey school case archives, as well as many Indian cases studies. In virtually every course, students are expected to prepare projects or perform real-world analytics. A strong group of quantitative subjects rounds out the overall program.

Learning : Research and Analysis In business schools around the world, there is a strong emphasis on research. Students have access to unlimited resources and reference material to conduct research into their fields of specialty. At ITM, while students have access to large libraries on campus, they can access a whole universe of information through our two most prized research resources- EBSCO, the world's largest online archive of over 2000 business and management journals, news and research; and the Harvard Business Review Online, a comprehensive archive of full-text articles/research papers from the Harvard School of Business. At ITM, we believe in the practice of balancing our full-time faculty and visiting faculty ratios. The basis of this is in the fact that visiting faculty from Industry bring real-time business know-how and current practices into the classroom. Full-time faculties, on the other hand, are ideally suited to teach high-intensity, information rich courses.

Transformation : Professional & Personal Development During their formative years, students are exposed primarily to highly theoretical and book-based curricula, which often leave them with a developmental gap. ITM students are given courses in Self-Discovery, Personality Development, Yoga, Communication and Presentation skills, stress management, as well as spiritual and physical development (program dependent). These courses, combined with the regular course curriculum improve the overall learning and living experience at ITM.

Environment : Campuses, Culture and LifestyleEach ITM campus has been designed from the ground up to provide a comfortable, convenient and nurturing ambience. With spacious classrooms, seminar halls, extensive libraries and reference/study areas, cafeterias, gardens and quiet zones- our campuses are more than well equipped to handle the needs of the students of our various programs.
The PGDM program is a fully residential program at all ITM campuses, with separate hostels for men and women (ITM Chennai offers limited hostels for women only). Hostels are usually on twin-sharing basis per room, in apartment layouts. Students of other ITM programs may opt to stay at our hostels. ITM campuses are generally located slightly away from major metropolitan areas, allowing for a quieter, distraction-free environment. On-campus cafeterias serve full meals and snacks.
In addition to academic activities, students may choose to participate in the annual ITM management festival, competitive events, social events and various student clubs. Special recognition is given to students who help organize and manage non-academic activities including an improvement in their CGPA.

Technology : Computing, network and Internet capabilities In the new century, no management program can be considered complete without a focus on technology.
All ITM campuses are technology-rich, with a computer-to-student ratio of 1:1 or greater. A notebook computer is a requirement in the PGDM program. The Institute has an arrangement for the purchase of top-brand notebook computers at very low prices.
All campuses are outfitted with in-class LANs, high-speed internet connections, email, file and print services. ITM has undertaken a project of wireless networking in all campuses to be completed by Dec' 04.
ITM Navi Mumbai is proud to have India's first ever Institutional Live Securities Dealing Room, which provides hands-on training in securities, derivatives, commodities and foreign exchange trading. The lab features National Stock Exchange software from NSE.IT, data-feeds from Moneyline Telerate with industry renowned charting and analysis tools from Spider Software. This Financial Markets Lab adds a dimension of real-life experience and exposure to the PGDM Finance specialization

Real World : Interfacing with Industry At ITM, education rarely stays within the confines of the classroom. Dozens of seminars, panel discussions, corporate workshops and live-projects are conducted, in partnership with India 's best companies and managers. In 2003, students conducted and participated in events covering the fields of HRM, Finance, Marketing, Rural Marketing, Case Competitions etc. ITM is also a premier sponsor of some of the region's most vaunted business and technology conventions, seminars and events- which gives our students the kind of exposure that was once the exclusive domain of corporate executives. Many faculty members and students attend industry events such as the Leadership Convention, CII-NASSCOM conventions, BMA and AIMA annual management conventions etc.,

Launch platform : Placements, Careers and Professional Enhancement While many schools claim to have 100% placement, few talk about the quality and variety of companies that take their students. From ABB to Zydus Industries, over 300 of India 's name-brand companies recruit from ITM every year. These companies represent the leaders in every industry including FMCG, Infotech, Corporate Finance, Banking, Securities, Advertising and Marketing, NGOs, R&D etc. With top offers reaching Rs. 14 lacs/pa and median offers at Rs. 3.5 lacs/pa, it is no wonder that ITM has been ranked # 12 for placements on an all India basis.
The Placements teams at ITM campuses provide an efficient, professional and productive environment for both visiting companies and ITM students in their efforts to find the perfect Person-Position fit.

ITM Trust : Scholarships and Financial Aid Every year, ITM offers a limited number of scholarship and assistantship opportunities for exceptional students who are financially challenged. These range from a tuition fee waiver of 25% to 100% in exchange for on-campus employment as research assistants, administrative assistants, event managers etc. Other stipendiary positions are available from time to time.
If you are looking to finance your education through a bank, you will be pleased to know that ITM is listed as an approved Institution at all nationalized banks, and has an excellent reputation amongst private banks and financial institutions too. Most education loan schemes offer delayed repayment, which allows students to complete their programs and settle into their careers, without the immediate load of monthly installments. PG students can also finance their laptop computers through an education loan.

World Connect : Global Academic Collaborations In its pursuit of world-class education, ITM has sought partnerships with premier Universities and schools from around the world. These partnerships allow us to keep our curricula updated, to exchange students, and to offer new programs. ITM has academic partnerships with:
• Southern New Hampshire University , USA
• Queen Margaret University College , Scotland
• Groupe ESSCA , France
• EDHEC Grand Ecole , France
• Tongji University , China

PGDM
The Post Graduate Diploma in Management is ITM’s Flagship Management Program.. It is a two-year, full time, fully residential program approved by AICTE and is offered at four ITM Campuses:

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE (IISC), BANGALORE

General Info - About IISc
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was conceived as a 'Research Institute' or 'University of Research' by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, in the twilight years of the 19th century. A long period of almost thirteen years was to elapse from the initial conception in 1896 to the birth of the Institute on May 27, 1909. The early history of the Institute is a fascinating chapter in the story of higher education and scientific research in India. The cast of characters in the drama that led to the establishment of the Institute includes, in addition to its charismatic and generous founder J.N. Tata, figures from the pages of Indian history. There is Swami Vivekananda, whom J.N. Tata befriended on his famous voyage to the United States, the Maharaja of Mysore, Shri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and his mother then acting on his behalf, and Lord Curzon the Viceroy of India, whose first task on arrival on December 31, 1898 was to receive a draft proposal prepared by the Provisional Committee set up to plan the establishment of the Institute.
The plan was shepherded through many difficult years by Burjorji Padshah, a close associate of J.N. Tata. Unfortunately, J.N. Tata died in 1904 unaware that his vision would indeed be realized a few years later. When the British Government finally issued the Vesting Order in 1909, an unmatched experiment in higher education and research was launched in India. IISc is truly the first example of a public-private partnership in this country; an institution, whose evolution over a century is testimony to the robustness of its foundations. The Institute occupies nearly 400 acres of prime land in Bangalore, generously donated bythe Maharaja of Mysore in March 1907. Indeed, the contribution from the princely state of Mysore was the decisive element in determining the location of J.N. Tata's proposed institution. Remarkably, in a gesture unmatched in the annals of private philanthropy in India, Tata did not wish his name to be associated with the Institute. His dream was to create an institution that would contribute to the development of India. The name, Indian Institute of Science, which was finally chosen, reflects in every way the wishes of J.N. Tata. Visitors to Bangalore who seek out IISc still have to ask local residents for directions to the 'Tata Institute', a clear recognition that Jamsetji Tata's act of generosity has remained undimmed in public memory, despite the passage of a century.
The Institute began with only two departments: General and Applied Chemistry and Electro-Technology. The first Director, Morris W Travers began the task of organizing the Institute shortly after his arrival in India at the end of 1906. Travers began the construction of the main building, which is one of Bangalore's landmarks today. The Departments of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry together with the Library were among the earliest to be established. The Physics department came into being in 1933, when C.V. Raman became the first Indian Director of the Institute. In the century that has passed since its inception, IISc has grown to become India's premier centre for research and postgraduate education in science and engineering. The evolution of the Institute over the past one hundred years has mirrored the development of science and technology in India. A long history, a strong tradition of academic research and an ambience that favours scholarly activity have been important elements in making the Institute a most attractive place for students and faculty.
As the Institute has grown, several new areas of research have been established, many of them for the first time in India. The Institute's departments in fields ranging from Biochemistry to Aerospace Engineering have served to nucleate research and development in both the public and private sectors. The faculty and alumni of the Institute have been responsible for establishing and spearheading many new institutions and programs across the country, reflecting in a real sense, a major contribution of this centre of learning to national growth and development. Homi Bhabha conceived the idea of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and an Atomic Energy Program while working in the Department of Physics. Vikram Sarabhai, the founder of India's space program was an alumnus. Following his premature death, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) was built by the farsighted leadership of Satish Dhawan, who simultaneously held the position of the Director of the Institute with the greatest distinction. The first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Kharagpur was established by J.C.Ghosh, who was the Director of IISc in the critical period 1939-48, during which much of the activity in engineering was initiated at the Institute.
Many of India's most distinguished scientists have been associated with the Institute as students or faculty. Notable among them are G.N. Ramachandran, Harish Chandra, S. Ramaseshan, Brahm Prakash, A. Ramachandran, C.N.R. Rao and R. Narasimha. Alumni of the Institute head many major organizations in India and abroad. The Institute offers a variety of Master's degree programs in Engineering, an integrated (post-B.Sc.) program in sciences and Ph.D. programs in a wide spectrum of disciplines in science and engineering. The research laboratories at the Institute are well equipped. Many national facilities are housed at the Institute. The library and computational facilities at the Institute are amongst the best in India. A major program for modernizing laboratories is underway, catalyzed by a special grant provided by the Government of India in 2006. The Institute hosts hundreds of visitors from India and abroad every year and is the venue for many major national and international academic events.
The face of science and engineering research has been changing very rapidly over the past few years. In approaching the second century of the Institute many new activities have been initiated. Notable among them are the interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs in Mathematical Sciences, Chemical Biology, Earth System Science, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and Nanoengineering for Integrated Systems. These programs are intended to blur the traditional boundaries between disciplines, thereby promoting cross-disciplinary research. An M.Tech. program in Climate Science has also been introduced. A new Centre for Earth Sciences has been established and two new centres in the areas of Neuroscience and Climate Change are expected to begin activities in the near future. The Institute hopes to foster collaborative and interdisciplinary research in a vigorous fashion in the years to come. The Institute is also committed to promoting post-doctoral research in the areas of science and engineering. The Institute engages in interactions with society and industry through a variety of outreach programs. The Centre for Scientific and Industrial Consultancy (CSIC) and the Society for Innovation and Development (SID) promote collaborative interactions with industry, while the Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) provides an opportunity for working scientists and engineers to enrich themselves academically. The Institute actively promotes programs that encourage bright young school and undergraduate students to undertake research careers. The Institute's Young Fellowships Program in Science and Engineering seeks to bring young students to the campus in summer. The Institute also administers the Kishore Vaigyanik ProtsahanYojana (KVPY) program of the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The Institute's commitment to socially relevant research is specifically emphasized by the activities undertaken at the Centre for Sustainable Technologies (CST), together with the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST), which is housed on the campus.
To live and work at the Institute is a special privilege. Anniversaries are an occasion for both celebration and introspection. In reflecting on the past, present and future of the Institute, in this Centenary Year, an exchange between Morris Travers, the first Director, and Lord Willingdon, the then Viceroy, is worth recounting. Willingdon went around the Institute in June 1914 and said: "I had no idea that there was anything like this in India". Travers responded: "There is nothing like it in India; and nothing better in Great Britain". In ensuring that this sentiment is true, a great deal of work remains to be done.
