The National Institute Of Engineering,Mysore

THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING
A PERSPECTIVE
The National Institute of Engineering (NIE) was started in the year 1946 with admission only to a diploma course in Civil Engineering. The first batch of 86 students answered their attendance call sitting in a rustic room with thatched roof in Laxmipuram. Later, the classes were held in a temporary shed in the Sharada Vilas High School campus. However, the untiring efforts of the retired senior engineer trio, Sri.S.Ramaswamy, Sri.D.V.Narasimha Rao and Sri.T.Rama Rao, the NIE founders, gave fruition when the NIE was securely established by 1950 with its own class rooms and workshops on a sprawling 6-acre land in Mysore South.

The students, who were preparing for AMIE in Civil Engineering (NIE had started AMIE also in 1948 for intermediate passed students), were permitted to change over to the regular degree course leading to B.E. Degree in Civil Engineering of the Mysore University. Thus, NIE became the second Engineering College in the state and the first in Mysore. In 1958-59, NIE got private-aided institution status under grant-in-aid code of Karnataka Government.

The NIE is being managed by a committee of President, Vice-President, Hon.Secretary and Hon.Treasurer besides six Directors. As per the statute of the AICTE, the Governing Council, which assists the NIE administration, has five NIE Directors, Principal and five nominated members of Government of India, Karnataka Government, AICTE and VTU, Belgaum.

The NIE Society is also running the National Industrial Training Institute, which offers a technical job oriented Diploma programme for S.S.L.C passed students, and the NIE College of Science, which offers Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Computer Science and the NIE Pre-University College.

THE MEN OF VISION
Sri S.Ramaswamy (1888-1958)
Retired Superintending Engineer, Mysore Public Works Department.

He had received special commendation from H.H.Sri Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, then Maharaja of Mysore. He was the first Principal of NIE.

Sri D.V.Narasimha Rao (1889-1975)
Retired Chief Engineer, Mysore State Railways.

He had undertaken major railway works in the then Mysore State and had received many honours. He was the first Secretary of NIE.

Sri T.Rama Rao (1891-1965)
Retired Executive Engineer, Mysore Public Works Department.

He had served in then Madras and Mysore States and had executed challenging Hulikere tunnel. Popularly called "Tunnel Rama Rao", he served as Principal of NIE during 1958-59.

"N.I.E. has survived various types of crises with courage and devotion and has withstood the test of time and became really a unique Institution. We earnestly hope that the students and staff of N.I.E will emulate, now and in future, the spirit of dedication and selfless service to society. The object of the founders was not only merely to train qualified engineers with detailed knowledge of changing and up-to-date scientific discoveries, but also to make them useful citizens who would play their part in shaping the destiny of modern India".
D.V.Narashima Rao
in 1972

PRESENT STATUS
Today, NIE is one of the premier institutions in the country offering B.E. degree in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Information Science, Electrical, Electronics, Industrial & Production, Mechanical Engineering and part-time B.E (evening course) for practicing Civil Engineering Diploma holders. The NIE also offers Master's degree specializations in Hydraulics, Power Systems, Production Engineering & System Technology, Computer Applications to Industrial Drives, Computer Network Engineering, Information Technology and Product Design & Manufacturing and Computer Applications (MCA). The NIE is a recognised research institution under VTU and offers Doctoral Programmes in Civil, Electrical, Computer Science, Mechanical and Industrial Production Engineering.

According to the Outlook Magazine survey - 2006 of the Top Engineering Colleges in the country, NIE holds 55th position, 6th position in the state and 3rd position among VTU affiliated colleges.

In fact, the NIE alumni have occupied high positions in educational institutes like IITs, IISc, and IIM, national research laboratories and in major industrial units in India and abroad. Some of the alumni have become very successful entrepreneurs.

As NIE marked the milestone of the fiftieth anniversary in 1996, a year-long Golden Jubilee Celebrations were held during 1996-97. To mark the Diamond Jubilee occasion (2006-07), NIE Management through the NIE foundation has proposed to construct a hi-tech indoor sports complex at the newly acquired 6 acre plot near the existing campus. This project is likely to complete by September 2008. NIE has a landed property of 5.48 Acres of land under No.1817/A & 6.37 Acres of Land under No.1126/5-F31 & 1126/6-F31/1.
