INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT INDORE (IIMI), INDORE

Established in 1996, Indian Institute of Management Indore is the sixth in the prestigious IIM family of management schools. The institute was chosen to be set up in Indore to give an impetus to management education in central India and has ever since been acting as the pioneer in the field of management, interfacing with the industry, government sectors and PSUs.

The essence of management, IIM I believes, lies in managing one's own ambitions and forging ahead consciously. "A strong theoretical foundation is the basis of good corporate practice" this, coupled with a grounding in management as it is practiced, is the underlying theme of the flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP). Spanning two years the programme is benchmarked against similar programmes of the best business schools in the world. Experiential learning, IT orientation, and social sensitivity are some of the unique features of the programme.

Situated atop a scenic hillock, the beautiful 193 acre campus provides an ideal backdrop for some of the brightest minds in the country to work their best to become the best they can be. To back this up, IIM Indore has a solid infrastructure ranging from a very beautiful campus and hostels to a strong IT backbone and the latest in teaching aids. The geographical proximity to the fastest growing industrial belt in India and the presence of Special Economic Zones around Indore provide the right environment for both giving hands-on experience to the students and in enabling the industry to make use of the wealth of management expertise available in the institute.

IIM Indore’s achievements in such a short span of time can be attributed to its innovative spirit, its will to excel, and, to a great extent, to the relationship it has developed with the Indore community.

Post Graduate Program in Management

The Post Graduate Programme (PGP) in Management at IIM Indore is a two-year, full-time, residential programme. It is recognised by the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to M.B.A. Degree. The programme aims to groom participants into competent professional managers with—

• a capacity to learn and adapt to national and international environment;
• an orientation towards achieving excellence, maintaining high ethical standards; and
• a capacity to work effectively and efficiently, both individually and in-groups.

The PGP is spread over two years, each year consisting of three terms. In between the first and second years, the participant spends eight weeks on a summer project in a business organisation. The academic year begins in June/July and ends in March/April of the following year.

The PGP of IIM Indore have some special features like:

Experiential Learning,
International Focus,
Information Technology Orientation, and
Social Sensitivity

Another unique feature of the PGP at IIM Indore is a compulsory course called Society, Business and Management which exposes the participants to the ethical dilemmas and social responsibilities of business through classroom sessions and develops their social sensitivity through a one-week attachment with an NGO or the CSR wing of a business organization.

Pedagogy

IIM Indore uses a combination of various teaching methods such as cases, projects, independent studies, computer aided instructions, group discussions, lectures, seminars, presentations by participants, and lectures by guest speakers from industry and government. The case method is the predominant pedagogical tool. This sharpens the analytical skills of participants and helps analyze problems from multi-functional perspectives. Instructors mainly guide the group, push participants to develop and defend arguments, and take decisions.

Structure

The Post Graduate Programme lasts six trimesters, spread over two years, with a summer project in between the two years. This eight-week programme is an opportunity for participants to put their ideas and skills to work in established and reputed companies from various sectors.

The first year participants are provided with the fundamental conceptual knowledge, analytical skills and techniques, contextual understanding, environmental awareness and overall perspective that will serve as the bedrock for the programme. The areas covered are Marketing, Finance, Human Resource Management, Quantitative Research, Operations, Economics and Strategy.

In the second year, electives will give participants a deeper understanding of different functional areas and enable them to specialize in areas of their choice. There is emphasis on the application of knowledge gained in the form of projects, group exercises and case discussions. Guest lectures and workshops further enrich their learning.

SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION & MANAGEMENT STUDIES, COCHIN

Another year of consistent growth

At the outset, I wish all of you a very happy and prosperous New Year.

We, at SCMS, have completed one more eventful year moving towards greater glory and achievements. The year 2007 was a period of consolidation, stability and consistent growth. Various institutions coming under SCMS Group scaled new peaks in performance during the period. Some of the most remarkable achievements during the year includes:

Elevation of SCMS-COCHIN as the largest B. school in , in the autonomous sector, with a total intake capacity of 270 for its PGDM programme.

Exceptional status for SCMS School of Engineering & Technology as the most preferred choice for engineering admission among all the private self-financing engineering colleges in Kerala, as per the State Entrance Commissioner as appeared in The Hindu daily.

Approval as a Research Centre for doctoral programmes in management for SCMS School of Technology and Management (SSTM) by the Mahatma Gandhi University. SSTM is the first institution to get this status under the M.G.University.

A breakthrough by developing, for the first time in Kerala, a diagnostic kit for detecting Chikungunya virus by SCMS Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology Research and Development (SIBB-R&D)

We take this opportunity to rededicate ourselves to continue our expedition to scale still higher peaks during 2008.

Having been in the forefront of the higher education sector in India for the last more than three decades, and engaged in shaping the destiny of our younger generation, I think it is time for us to have a rethinking on the purpose and role of education in moulding the young individuals to create a brighter future for the humanity at large.

It seems to me that there is need for a radical realignment and redefining of the purpose of education in the emerging socio cultural scenario. Today the focus is simply on educating the individuals to equip them with a set of skills and aggregation of knowledge to meet the needs of economic activity in the market place. In the process of shaping individuals into components of economic production we are missing the deeper meaning and higher nobler purpose of education. What we give today in the name of education is restricted to a kind of conditioning of the individual, preparing him for the limited function of fulfilling the requirements of the market economy. This fragmented education is no longer sufficient to resolve the more crucial problems we are facing in the world.

Let us try to explore the unexplored human potential embracing it fully to give rise to immensely creative and transformative approaches to life’s challenges, which will in turn touch the heart of education – the creation of a happy life to all.

SCMS offers a Post Graduate programme in Management which is highly industry relevant and has electives ranging from HR, Finance , marketing and systems and Operations to the latest most sought after areas today as Insurance and Banking , Retailing and Merchandising .The PGDM is AICTE approved , Accredited , AIU recognised and ISO Certified. This full time residential programme is offered in 6 trimesters over a two year period.

An applicant should be a graduate in any discipline from a recognized University with aggregate 60 percent marks. Candidates appearing for final year degree examination can also apply.
