Gondia Edu.Soc's Manoharbhai Patel Inst.Of Engg & Tech, Gondia

About GES
History throws up many a great event in the political, social, religious, economic, industrial and educational fields and every event gives birth to a leader and an endearing personality. The advent of Manoharbhai Patel Institute of Engineering & Technology, popularly known in India as MIET of Gondia, has been a memorable event and that too as a crowning glory in a chain of great events in the district of Bhandara going back to the era of freedom struggle in Indian history. Those were the days of the Raj and its hold on India was total and complete. Then came the days when its hold on Indians became less and less and reached to a point when the days of the Raj were numbered. By 1945 every Indian rose up to the occasion to the call of Mahatma Gandhi. Though India was enslaved by the alien rule Indians never felt enslaved and rose up to show that India was resurgent in every field of activity in every city, in every town and in every village of India. Bhandara district in the then known central province was also one of the shining examples of resurgent India. The achievement of the people of Bhadara in the filed of education led by a visionary leader and the attendant results accomplished would speak for itself. Literacy and education were not the priority of the Raj as their sole focus was to hold on to their colony, India, the jewel in the Crown. Most of the districts of India were suffering for want of any basic amenities. Bhandara was also one of those districts worst affected. The glaring and shocking fact was that 94% of the population of Bhandara district was illiterate! There was only one Government public school in he whole of the district! In 1945 what Bhandara witnessed was the snowballing effect of a determined local initiative. A few resurgent people led by late Mr. Manoharbhai Patel, a wealthy and well known businessman and a philanthropist, came forward to set up the second school in Gondia town in the district with help coming from his friends. It was in that period the concept of Gondia Education Society was mooted and later the Society came into existence. In the ensuing six years many more primary and secondary schools were set up one by one on a relay basis. It was indeed a relentless and tireless effort. The results were path breaking. The literacy rate rose from a mere 6% to 14% in the Bhandara district! But, late Manoharbhai was not fully satisfied. What made him to move further was that in spite of this enviable achievement there was no college for higher education in the Bhandara district. It was again late Shri Manoharbhai Patel leading in the front to gather support for establishing the first college in Gondia. With the help and cooperation of his trusted colleagues the first college was started with a skeleton staff in a warehouse provided by Manoharbhai's close friend and associate late Shri. C.J. Patel. That was the beginning of the second collective initiative. In a short span of ten years and by 1961 Gondia Education Society could establish 22 high schools spread across the district and in the same year two more colleges were also established. One great act that would speak volumes as to how much late Manoharbhai and his friends were devoted to the noble cause they all espoused and assiduously pursued was transferring all educational institutions founded by Gondia Education Society to the local Zilla Parishad (District Council). It required a grand vision to think in terms of setting a grand and a glorious precedent in public service. A dreamer never stops dreaming and Late Manoharbhai Patel was a dreamer par excellence. He was still restless as something still made him to feel not fully content with his enormous feats. This was attributed to his earnest desire, a longing of his heart, he often expressed to his colleagues and son. That was to establish an institute of engineering and technology in Gondia. Manoharbhai Patel Institute of Enginering & Technology (MIET) established in 1983 is the pride among the various institutions that came up in Gondia and stands as a monument to the vision and dream of the great crusader against illiteracy, Late Manoharbhi Patel. The other colleges and schools run by GES are as follows
1958: The Society was formed by Late Shri Manoharbhai Patel to improve the level of education in the district of Bhandara in Maharhastra. The objective being the overall development of the personality of an individual. To this end , the NMD College of Arts and Commerce was established.

BRIEF HISTORY
Fr. Conceicao Rodrigues College of Engineering (CRCE) was established in 1984 as part of Fr. Agnel Technical Complex at Bandra, Mumbai by the Society of St. Xavier Pilar, a public and charitable trust.
The College of Engineering is named after one of its founding father, Reverent Fr. Conceicao Rodrigues who was a rare visionary and freedom fighter possessed with unbounded energy and resoluteness of purpose. Under the inspiration of this charismatic founder, the Agnel Fathers (the trustees of St. Francis Xavier Pilar) realized that their contribution to the process of nation building would be through the spread of facilities for technical education and accordingly acquired experience in providing technical education facilities through the establishment of Technical Educational complexes in different part of country - Bandra (Mumbai), Vashi (Navi Mimbai), Verna (Goa), New Delhi, Noida, Pune, and Ambarnath (Thane). Each unit imparts technical education at various levels - skilled trades, technicians, and engineers.
Beginning with an orphanage (Bal Bhuvan) and a trade school in carpentary, the Agnel Ashram (set up in 1957 at Bandra, Mumbai) has today grown into a full fledged Technical Complex with Industrial Training Institute, Polytechnic, and Engineering College, along with a school (Kinder Garden to 12th Standard).
Though Fr. Rodrigues did not live long enough to see his dream come true in the form of College of Engineering at Bandra, the clearance for this college had just been obtained days before his sudden demise in 1984. The college today proudly bears his name as a fitting tribute to his impassioned faith in highly qualified and fully trained engineers and technicians in the service of the nation. The visionary principles on which the institution was founded have been nurtured and fostered in succeeding years and continue to guide the functioning of the college even today.
The College is named after its founder Late Rev. Fr. Conceicao Rodrigues. The College was started with only one course Production Engineering with intake capacity of 60 students. Three years later, in 1987, course in Electronics Engineering was started with intake capacity of 60 students. In 1991, course in Computer Engineering was started with intake capacity of 60 students. In 2000, the intake capacity of Computer Engineering Course was doubled. In 2001, the course in Information technology was started with intake capacity of 30 students.

About us:
Fr. Tony D'Souza, the Provincial of the Mumbai province of the Salesians of Don Bosco entrusted the task of building the Don Bosco Institute of Technology (DBIT) to Fr. Mario Vaz, now its Director and his team comprising Fr. Jeffrey Fernandes the Principal of S.J.I.T.I and Fr. Anthony Santarita the then administrator. In the mind of the Salesians, DBIT would have to be an engineering college with a difference and so right from the start emphasis was laid on good infrastructure and well qualified staff that would cultivate and nurture every entrant into the portals of DBIT and inspire them to excellence. This meant setting up policies and processes that would ensure this objective.
We are fortunate in having Dr. B. S. Bhatt, former principal of VJTI as our advisor who guides us every step of the way. Mr. Albert D'souza, a friend of the Salesians was instrumental in ensuring that every requirement for the engineering college was met.
In Dr. S.Krishnamoorthy, the Salesians found a man not only highly qualified and experienced but also a person with sound values and pedagogical principles that were akin to the philosophy of Don Bosco's system of education. It is our cherished hope that every student who passes out of DBIT will be self-reliant and a socially conscious engineer.
The Founder - Don Bosco - A man with a vision and a mission.
St. John Bosco was born in Turin, Italy in 1815. When he was two years old, his father died. This future saint, raised by his mother, experienced the pains of poverty at a very tender age. John's future work was inspired by a dream he had at the age of nine. He wanted to become a priest, especially to assist youth. In order to pursue his dream John had to leave home at a young age to join the city school. Being bigger than his classmates, he was often the object of much ridicule. Little did they know at what cost John finished his schooling. After school he worked as a tailor, a cobbler or a waiter, often studying by candle light late into the night. On completing his education he began his studies to be a priest.
John Bosco was ordained a priest at the age of twenty-six. He was now called Don [Father] Bosco. He immediately began his work with orphans. He opened a hospice for boys where his mother served as the housekeeper. He not only fed the homeless boys whom he took in but also provided them with opportunities for livelihood skills. He spent long hours teaching them to read and write; he also taught them tailoring and shoemaking and quickly set up a printing press. Above all, he created a family atmosphere of trust and caring. Those who helped him were amazed at the transformation in several youngsters.
Soon those associated with Don Bosco and his work began to accept him as their father and guide. Some expressed their desire to become like him. And so, the Salesian Society consisting of priests and lay brothers was born. (The word 'Salesian' was derived from St Francis de Sales, a saintly bishop noted for his gentle kindness and holiness. Don Bosco chose him as his personal model and later as the patron of his society.)
The greatest gift that Don Bosco has left posterity is his unique way of educating, a method that was inspired by his one magnificent obsession: "It is enough to know that you are young and abandoned for me to love you very much."
More than a century after the death of Don Bosco, thousands of people have dedicated themselves to the continuation if his apostolic love for young people all over the world. Their mission is to be "signs and bearers of God's love to the young."
The “Salesians of Don Bosco” is an international society founded by Don Bosco. Catholic priests and Brothers who are members of the Society work for the development and education of the young especially those most at risk. Through its 3000 Schools, Colleges, Technical schools and youth centers in 125 countries, the Salesians of Don Bosco serve all young people irrespective of religious differences or social inequalities.
In India, Don Bosco Educational institutions are spread all over the country and are in great demand. The style of education consists in involving young people, their parents or guardians and the educators in a family atmosphere. The method adopted is one that was lived and handed down by Don Bosco himself -“The Preventive System” based on Reason, Faith in God and Loving Kindness. The goal is Integral Education. This embraces developing physical and aesthetic talents, training in occupational skills, fostering intellectual skills and competence, furthering cultural development and integration with others, including moral uprightness.

The number of students passing the H.S.C. examination had increased form 1,065 in 1957-58.
The Demand For A University For Marathwada :
For a longer period Marathwada was educationally neglected. There ware only nine intermediate college and ninety-five high schools for a total population 5,300,000 in Marathwada region before 1st November 1958. Moreover all the college were affiliated to the Osmania University, Hyderabad. The Student of Aurangabad (Marathwada) had to go to the Osmania University of Hyderabad for further studies. There were no facilities for post graduate and research students. It was difficult for a student of average means form the distinct to avail of the educational facilities in Hyderabad.Hence there was a demand form the people of Marathwada region for having an independent University in Marathwada Region increased when the number of students had to go all the way to Hyderabad for their education. After merging of the Marathi speaking areas of Hyderabad in the old state of Bombay the people of Marathwada felt free to give expression to their aspiration, and began to voice their demand for the establishment of University for the region. Educational and other associations urged the need for a separate University for Marathwada for the educational cultural and general development of the region.
In the Osmania University, the medium of instruction was Urdu as it was established in the Nizam State After political change in 1947, the independence of India the regional language were adopted as medium of Secondary Level Education. Therefore, It was necessary to teach the higher education in regional language because of this problem people form Marathwada region demanded a new University for the educational as well as Socio Economical development.
The Movement :
On 12th December 1954 meeting was organized by Marathwada Shikshan Samiti in which emphasis was given on Separate University for the purpose of cultural and Educational activities two Convention of members of Parliament and of the State Legislature in 1955-1956 strongly represented the need for a University on 29th July 1956 a delegation of members of Parliament and of the state Legislature an educationists in Marathwada Submitted memorandum to the Chief Minister of Hyderabad State making of similar demand the Government of Hyderabad appointed a committee. The 23rd August 1958 will be inscribed in golden letters in the annals of the history of the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, as it was on this day that Shri. Late Jawaharlal Nehru, prime minister of India, inaugurated the University in the presence of the large & distinguished gathering at Aurangabad on the premises of the temporary building of the University office. On this historic occasion, the prime minister unveiled a marble plague on which has been inscribed the words :
DR. BABASAHEB AMBEDKAR MARATHWADA UNIVERSITY,
THIS UNIVERSITY WAS INAUGURATED,
BY
THE PRIME MINISTER
SHRI JAWAHARLAL NEHRU ON THE
23RD DAY OF AUGUST 1958.

Shri Prakash, chancellor of the University, the governor of Bombay, presided over the function, and among the distinguished guest present on occasion were Shri Hitendra Desai, Minister of education, Shri Bhagwantrao Gadhe, Minister of Forest, Shri Devsing Chauhan and Shri Shankar Rao Chauhan. More than 3,000 including students and teachers the leading citizens of Aurangabad and other important cities of Marathwada were present at the gathering.
Location:
The places were suggested for the seat of the University via Aurangabad, Nanded & Mominabad. The seat for the University was to be at Aurangabad. The reasons in favor of locating the University at Aurangabad are very cogent. Aurangabad has for a long time been an important cultural center of Marathwada.Deogiri (Daulatabad), the capital of Yadavas is only 8 miles from it, while the world famous Ellora caves, are 4 miles further, and the Ajanta caves whose frescoes have won the admiration of the world are just 64 miles from it.Paithan, the ancient Pratisthan of Eknath and Maharubhav fame, is 34 mils away. Aurangabad was a division center during the Hyderabad regime.Hence the committee strongly recommended that the seat of the University is located at Aurangabad.
University Buildings :
The Government of Bombay lent the two-storied building belonging to the middle school situated in Aurangpura (New Zilla Parishad) with its annexes. Until such time as the University is able to construct its own buildings on the University campus. It was proposed to utilize the existing building for the office. The meeting of the University bodies, for accommodating the University departments and library and for holding some of the post graduates classes.
Affiliation:
In all the eight colleges in Marathwada were affiliated to the Osmania University, when the Marathwada University was established in June-1958 one more college at Jalna was affiliated in the month of July of the same year. The affiliation of nine colleges with the Osmania University terminated on October 31, 1958. The nine colleges are as follows:

The Bibi Ka Makabara helps to break the monotony of landscape to the north cast of the campus.
The design adopted for the coat of arms bears the following emblems:-
(1) An Ajanta Arch with a base in which the above - mentioned motto is inscribed. The arch is a symbol of the glory of the art of painting and sculpture which reached their acme in the Ajanta Caves, a glory that has survived, undimmed and unrivalled, through centuries, and thousand of admiring visitors to this day from the most distant part of the world.
